What is Make a Difference?

Make a Difference (MaD) is an initiative started in August of 2008 at Hope Network in Grand Rapids MI by Anne Mitchell, a consultant that we hired to assist us in moving toward a total culture change within all of our programs; a culture of full inclusion, gentleness, relationships, and community. For years we have provided services for huge numbers people coming out of institutions. We provided  group homes and sheltered workshop settings where people can earn a paycheck by doing…

The fees are very high to maintain the site but charging fees is against my principles of social networking and community building. Please suggest any other solutions you may have.

I cannot believe this conference. Every conference I've ever been to for 28 years have been very informational. I cram my head full of information, then rush back hoping I don't forget it. By the time I get back, I've forgotten most of it. Within a month, it is almost all gone.

This conference is transformational! It is designed around learning, totally. It took the first day and a half of deep dialogue before an agenda could be designed around the learning needs of the group. The result is transformational. The incredible wisdom has changed me. It has changed my heart and my mind. AND it all goes back with me to Hope Network in Grand Rapids MI, because it is a part of me . . . this learning is now me . . .

Designing a conference to be a deep learning experience. What a concept!!!

Bravery

Usually if we say someone is brave, we mean that he is not afraid of any enemy or he is willing to die for a cause or he is never intimidated. Our understanding of bravery is quite different. Here bravery is the courage to be--to live in the world without any deception and with tremendous kindness and caring for others . . . it is the expression of human goodness, based not on arrogance or aggression, but on gentleness and openness. In the ancient Shambhala tradition, it is the way of the warrior.
(Chogyam Trungpa, Shambhala: the Sacred Path of the Warrior, pp. 108, 109)

"The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them."
(Thomas Merton, 1915-68)

The world has enough big ideas

In our own woundedness, we can become a source of life for others.

The shoe that fits one person pinches another;

There is no recipe for living that fits all cases.

"There’s a difference between doing things for people out of generosity and being with people. The whole reality of L’Arche is to enter into relationship and become vulnerable. There’s not an end or a goal that we’re seeking. It’s about the creation of a place where we can rejoice in our humanity because we’ve been bonded together."

"In meeting people with disabilities, many people discover something about themselves. There’s a discovery of who they are in their brokenness."

Learning to see:
